Seven Wonders of the Wonderful Word

Updated: Jun 25

Anything that encourages a love for the pure word of God is a valuable addition to a Bible-believer's library. Such discussions of Scripture can be a fresh breeze when things feel stale, can stoke the fire when life threatens to quench it, and give insight when we start to feel that we've "seen it all." Unfortunately, some of the riches resources on this topic are from a bygone era, and can be difficult to come by today. With a little digging and a pretty penny paid, however, I have managed to secure one such text - Seven Wonders of the Wonderful Word by Harry Rimmer. This brief text (only 71 pages) is written with beautiful simplicity and wit, and contains insights about the incredible nature of Scripture that I have not found elsewhere.

Normally, I would recommend a book like this and provide links for anyone interested in purchasing it, however as far as I can tell this particular book is both out of copyright and not currently in print by any publisher. As such, I think I am safe in providing a clean, scanned PDF copy of the text here for free! The downloadable text is below, but to whet your appetite, here is a highlight from each chapter:

Antiquity

The "oldness" of Scripture makes it remarkable. It has survived through thousands of years intact where every other such text is, at best, only fragments, or lost altogether.

Modernity

Scripture is very old, and by all human reason this would disqualify it from being modern. And yet it is! The Bible is as relevant and up-to-date today as it was when it was composed. Consider how incredible that is!

Diversity

The Bible contains every subject known to literature within its pages, and each demonstrated to the absolute perfection of its craft. But there is one subject that only the Bible contains - prophecy. Mystics may ape prophecy, but only the Bible truly contains it.

Unity

Despite the great diversity of subjects and authors, and despite the great spans of time that spread the composition of its sixty-six books over thousands of years, the Bible is in complete harmony and agreement with itself. Some texts composed by a single author over a matter of months fail to achieve this!

Theme

The Bible maintains a clear and common theme - a focus on the One who is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and end of all things - Jesus Christ. The Old Testament is about the One who would come. The Gospels are about the One who came. And the New Testament is about the One who is coming again. Praise God!

Power

As Rimmer himself says, "[The Bible] has been the most potent influence ever exerted in human annals. It has changed the flow of history, erected empires and cast down conquerors and kings, bringing blessing and success to those who obeyed its precepts, and death and oblivion to those who fought against it. The highway of human events is strewn with the wrecks of time, while the ageless and eternal Book survives!" (p. 57)

Comfort

As Rimmer himself says, "Here, as in every other field of service to man the Bible is unique, unprecedented, and unparalleled! There has not been and never will be any other light that can enable man to see beyond the grave and find hope and assurance for himself, and comfort for his heart when loved ones are taken from his home." (p. 68)
