Ephesians 3:20-21

Writer's picture: VanguardVanguard
20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, 21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

On the heels of Paul's four-part prayer, he reminds us that God is able to do far more than we ask or think. It seems as if believers often read "think" as meaning "imagine,” and that is fair. But could it also be more convicting? The sense could be "God is able to do more than we give him credit for." How often this is true! How often we fail to avail ourselves of all that He is capable of on our behalf. How often we limit Him with our small prayers and weak faith. How often we rely on our own petty strength and solutions. "Unto Him be the glory" should be our prayer right alongside Paul, as His power “worketh in us,” (Romans 1:16, Romans 15:13, I Corinthians 1:18, I Corinthians 2:5, II Timothy 1:7).

Verse twenty-one by itself could be considered a concise summary of the New Testament. It gives us who (“him” referring to the Father from verse 14), what (“glory”), where (“in the church”), how (“by Christ Jesus”), and when (“throughout all ages”).

Finally, notice that chapter three ends with an “amen” as now in chapter four the topic shifts from doctrine to practice.
